I browsed through my food pic archive the other day wondering – as you often do – why I didn’t delete something I thought I’d never use anyway.
So I happened upon seven folders where things hadn’t met my expectations because
a) recipe didn’t work out as expected but pics looked OK-ish
b) food tasted good but it was a food pic failure / I wasn’t able to make the food look appetising
c) neither recipe – although result was totally edible – nor pics were any good
On food blogs you mainly see the good results, but I thought I’d show you my seven fails here, because let’s face it – no one and nothing is perfect.
Click any pic in the gallery to see what’s what and what happened.
Potato & Veg Bake – my take on mixing cauliflower cheese with leftover potato cubes, broccoli and chilli. Taste-wise it was great, but I couldn’t make the mess on the plate look anything other than a mess.
Pistachio Tiramisu – A friend’s Italian husband made this and I got vague directions, which obviously didn’t work, although you could taste a hint of what it could/should have been like. Photo background and plate choice didn’t work out either for me.
Strawberry Carpaccio – I’ve made this many times before, but this time I didn’t have the required raspberry vinegar and used balsamic instead, which made it look weird and spotty, and my photo background and props didn’t much help the restless vibe.
Vegetable Croquettes – A character in a book I read gave the recipe to someone who couldn’t cook saying it was the easiest recipe ever. My result looked a bit like dog food, and the taste was nothing to write home – or a post – about either.
Green Beans On Sweet Potato Mash – Very good taste-wise with mashed sweet potatoes mixed with cheese and topped with fresh green beans, onions, mushrooms and parsley. Looks-wise to me it resembled something you’d find in your pet’s food bowl, though.
The Trial & Error Burger – huge burger pattie on Turkish flat bread topped with caramelised yellow beets, onions and mushrooms. This burger came out beautiful in the pics, however I’d messed it all up by adding creamed horseradish to the raw meat (WHY!?!?) and then spreading chilli jam on the flatbread beneath the burger. Neither the horseradish nor the chilli jam were a good idea, but both together were disastrous. In the end I only ate the scraped off cheese and vegetables.
Mini Doboos Torte – My godmother couoldn’t remember her recipe and didn’t have it in writing, so I searched the web. Found two recipes and used the best features of each, or tried to… For one, I am not a cake decorator, so my little individual cakes looked terrible, and the sugar topping was inedible due to its thickness. I’m hoping that some day out of nowhere my godmother will pull up her recipe…
